New TIPA executive director named

Fred Stewart, student publications adviser at Texas A&M University-Commerce, has been named executive director of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, which includes community colleges as well as universities.
Stewart participated in TIPA as a community college student himself. He attended Tarrant County Junior College-Northeast before transferring to The University of Texas-Tyler, where he served as co-editor of the student newspaper.
Regarding participation in TIPA, Stewart said: "Community colleges are very important to the overall organization. The community colleges and universities can work as partners in the overall journalism training and education of the students. The two divisions have this opportunity to come together via TIPA."
He noted that student leadership and faculty leadership in TIPA are shared by community colleges and universities.
Stewart's background includes working as journalism department head and student publications adviser for two community colleges, Yavapai College in Arizona and Ohlone College in California. He also served as director of public information at Texas A&M-Texarkana and Morehead State University in Kentucky, and as a journalism instructor at Northern Arizona State University.
He is a former executive director of the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Press Association.
Stewart has also worked as a sports editor managing editor and editor for community newspapers in Texas.
He succeeds Jeff Henderson of Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos as executive director of TIPA. Henderson served in that capacity for more than 20 years. Stewart responded to a request from the TIPA for proposals from institutions seeking to become the site of the organization's central office, and his proposal for Texas A&M-Commerce was chosen by the Executive Committee. The official vote and announcement were made in Wichita Falls, Texas, at the spring 2001 TIPA convention.
Also at the convention, Henderson was given a memory book and a plaque. In addition, a new scholarship, designated the Jeff Henderson Scholarship for Journalistic Excellence, was announced.
